Full kudos to the great man Lee Ellis… it was his concept we chose to develop the site. A box full of doodles. You get your own box, you doodle, you package it up and you send it in.
Now live in 13 languages and as a nice Facebook app, Doodlebox is one of our bigger Flash apps, with a fully-featured content management system to handle the vast number of applicants and doodles.
Project gallery
Opening sequence
A hand-drawn box spins out of nowhere, the lid flies off and doodles scatter all over the screen, becoming the 3D background. Its a nice start.
Explaining
We used the actual mechanics of the app to explain the way it works. Big clear buttons to get going too.
Hand-drawn animations
There were lots of hand-drawn elements driven by scripting - the overall effect was very "friendly"
Image Library
Users who didn't want to upload an image could of course choose from an image library.
Goat and judge
Sounds like a name for a pub. But the judge was one of our favourite bits - if clicked, he goes into a flying rage, complete with twitching eyebrow. Very, very funny.
Doodling
The whole point of the app was to allow easy doodling. Technically not the easiest thing in the world, but we provided drag and drop props and an easy to use drawing mechanic - complete with line-smoothing.
Goat with specs
Doodle done, it is time to submit the result...
Box lid as form
The sides of the "doodlebox" closed up and this lid flew in as the submission form.
User flow
To keep things nice and friendly, the app redirected to the "most recent" gallery, where of course that user's doodle was right at the front.
Tag wall
This provided an easy way to create "on the fly" galleries of doodles.
Multi-language
The language flipping is realtime. If you choose any of the 13 languages, the app stays on that section but updates all of the language content. Nice.
