Challenge: stop two French guys getting depressed about their record company releasing a ten-year anniversary edition of their best–known album “Moon Safari”.
Solution: Make it a celebration, a chance for the world to tell their “Moon Safari Stories”. It seems everyone has a story to tell about the place Moon Safari has in their life. It was the soundtrack to 1998, and has been with us ever since, part of our consciousness.
We built a nice app to collect these stories, threw in some beautiful Flash artwork, and lo, we had smiling Frenchmen once again. Et voilĂ !

We echoed the original artwork - stark line graphics with watercolour washes - with a modern twist. When the user arrived on the site, it was just the black and white part, and they "painted in" the colour as they moved the mouse around.
Special Edition #1
We used the "Moon Safari Shuttle" as the exploratory device for moving around the artwork...
Special Edition #2
Again, the user painting in the colour provided a really satisfying experience. Very addictive too.
Special Edition #3
We spent a fair while on the graphic design, making sure there were variations for landing pages. With such great artwork assets, it was a real trip to do.
Moon Safari Stories #2
It has been such a pleasure watching the stories come in. One of the first was from a Californian firefighter who used to listen to Moon Safari while fighting the huge forest fires. Inspiring.
Moon Safari Stories
The whole point was to collect people's stories about Moon Safari via a nice little Google Maps application. This was built before there was a Flash version of Google Maps, so needed some nifty JavaScript work. Still - it works well to this day.
Sexy Boy #1
Choosing "Sexy Boy" zoomed the user into a line drawn section of the shuttle. We built a number of little "toys" - one for each track. The Sexy Boy one was fun - you typed something into a text field for "I Love..." and (see next slide)
Sexy Boy #2
... you create an impromptu paint job for the shuttle, and a custom T-Shirt on the monkey

The "painting" mechanic allowed some rich use of album artwork. One of the nice touches was making the logo section in the top left reflect the logo from the era of the album the user was exploring at the time.
Painting mechanic #1
Starting quite minimal, the user starts to move the mouse...

...and creating a world
